- Nov 19-Jan 16 is the annual Holiday Train Show  at NY Botanical Garden (some of us have seen it, & wow!); & this yr folks have the chance to visit the artist's studio.
- & while the train show & it's accompanying activities are geared for kids & the kid in all of us, there is an adult venue...Sat bar car nites on Dec 3, 10, & 17. 
- The beauty of the Caribbean Garden runs Jan 21-Feb 26.
- Of course, there's the Jane Watson Irwin Perennial Garden (thru Nov) & the Ladies Border (thru Dec); or take in the last of the peak foliage

Flower Expo at the NY(Bronx) Botanical Garden Now

It's that time again at the NY Botanical Garden. Located in the Bronx and accessible by Metro North, it's well worth the trip.

Autumn's splendor comes alive with magnificent fall-flowering plants from Japan. Immerse yourself in the celebration of Japanese culture with enchanting traditional dance and music, intricate kiku, and much more. Internationally renowned artist and ikebana master Tetsunori Kawana creates a dazzling sculpture composed of reclaimed materials such as branches, vines, and stumps from the Garden's grounds.

What's Happening in JC this week (October 7)

Letting you know the City is hosting a Community Garden Tour of all of Jersey City's finest gardens. The tour is on October 23rd and starts at 11 am at the Riverview Community Garden where a van will take you to five other gardens. The list so far is Brunswick St Garden, Sgt Anthony Garden, Enos Jones Garden, City Hall Childrens garden, and the Storms Ave Garden. Bike JC will also be running a bike tour to compliment the van tour. If you're interested please email and I can have your spot reserved.

Soil in urban areas like Jersey City

More people are getting into urban gardening so questions of what is in the soil or may have been dumped here are arising. Here are a couple of links that might help shed some light on the subject. Of course, you can side step the whole issue by investing in raised bed gardens or containers. Beekeeping and Hens in Jersey City

Passing the following NOFA annoucement along 'cause I know that there are some of you interested in learning more about beekeeping...& some folks w/ family &/or friends who have kept hives.  The "treatment-free beekeeping" June 5th seminar  will take place @ Duke Farms in Hillsborough, NJ.

Also, lottsa other interesting topics, including the upcoming the June 12th "Urban Farming Field Day" event cross the river @ the Brooklyn Grange in Long Island City. (Thank you for the info Bethe)

Jersey City Food Co-op to hold a fundraiser

Sounds like a fun event for a good cause. Saturday, December 18th from 7pm to Midnight at the Barrow Mansion, 83 Wayne Street, Jersey City, NJ.

Green Fair held at City Hall in JC

The Green Fair was held on Saturday afternoon, November 30th.There was a good turnout for the businesses and organizations that participated. Among them were  the Jersey City Food Coop, Rising Tide Capital and everything from local yoga studios to crafts and energy companies.

Jersey City Food Coop Initiative food coop & buying club launched a new website on Sat, www.jcfoodcoop.coop.  & we're on facebook, too.

Garden as if your life depended on it

Here is a link to an article on Alternet that appeared this morning, (March 30). It sums up the reasons for having your own plot if you have space or investing in a community garden. The handwriting is on the wall as we get involved in yet another violent conflict that involves a fossil fuel producing country. Agriculture runs on oil so as the price goes up and up so will the price of your food. Here is the  Garden As If Your Life Depended On It article link .

Here is a link to an article about how the city of Detroit is implementing steps towards more urban self sufficiency. The key areas are urban farming, energy production and the emphasis on control of local communications rather than relying on corporate media.
